Spain are European champions! A single goal from Fernando Torres in the final in Vienna was enough to give "la selección" a 1-0 win over Germany and their first European title since 1964!
Luis Aragonés's side were on top for most of the game, and apart from a few minutes at the start of both halves the Germans hardly troubled Casillas. Lehmann had to keep out a deflection from Metzelder and Torres headed against the foot of the post before Xavi sent the Liverpool striker away for him to get between Lahm and Lehmann to clip the ball over the advancing keeper in to the net. And Sergio Ramos, Iniesta and Senna all came close to increasing the lead after the restart.
In the end though Torres's strike was enough, and Spain have finally take the title that has eluded them for so long. Congratulations from all of us here at Soccer-Spain! (29.06.08)
Spain got off to a bad start in their qualifiers, defeats against Northern Ireland and Sweden putting their chances of reaching the finals in jeopardy. But in the end a run of eight wins and a draw took them to the top of their group, where they qualified together with Sweden. (21.11.07)
As chance would have it, Spain were grouped together with Sweden again in the finals. And the other two group D members are also old acquaintances, Russia and Greece both being in their mini-league in the last European Championships four years ago. Memories of that tournament are not great after Iñaki Sáez's side were knocked out at the initial stage, but they will be hoping to do better this time around. If they do win through though they will be up against tough opposition in the next round, facing one of the sides from group C, which comprises France, Italy, Holland and Romania. (02.12.07)
