Spain did it! With probably their best display in the tournament, Spain cruised past Italy to win their third major trophy in a row. Del Bosque stuck to his tried and tested line-up, with Cesc Fàbregas once again as the "false number nine". And with just under a quarter of an hour on the clock they took the lead when Iniesta slipped a ball behind the defence for Fàbregas to cross in, Silva getting in front of his marker to head wide of Buffon. Casillas was called upon to make a couple of stops from Cassano, but with four minutes to go to the break Jordi Alba timed his run to perfection to pick up Xavi's return pass before beating Buffon for a second time. Cesare Prandelli brought on Di Natale at the break, and the striker headed just over the bar and then brought the save of the night from Casillas. But Fàbregas went close a couple of times, and Bonucci was lucky to be let off a penalty appeal when he blocked the ball with his arm inside the area. Just ten minutes in to the second half Prandelli made his third and final substitution, Motta replacing Montolivo, but five minutes later the new man limped off with a hamstring injury, and Italy were down to ten men. Del Bosque went for the jugular, and Fernando Torres came on to score a third after Xavi intercepted a wayward pass in midfield to put him through. And to wrap things up Torres set up fellow Chelsea substitute Mata for the fourth, helping himself to the top scorer's prize in to the bargain with three goals and an assist. Spain had re-written the record books once again, first side ever to win three major tournaments in a row, first to retain the European title, biggest win in a European final, and all of that without letting in a single goal in knock-out stages of major competitions since Zidane scored against them in the 2006 World Cup. The legend continues...
