Barcelona failed to win the
title of world champions after losing 0-1 to Internacional de Porto Alegre on
Sunday. After a comfortable win against América in their semi-final,
Frank Rijkaard's side were favourites to take the title for the first time in
their history. But their Brazilian opponents didn't allow them to play their
attacking football, and in the end a late goal from substitute Adriano put paid
to their hopes.
Despite fears that the long
trip could leave his players tired, Rijkaard put out the same line up as in the
semi-final. And for most of the first half they were on top, Deco testing
Clemer with a long shot and Ronaldinho and Gudjohnsen shooting wide.
However the Brazilians
caught them out with a quick counter-attack near the end, Iarley finding
Adriano for him to fire in a shot which Valdés got a hand to but
couldn't stop entering the net. Deco brought a good save out of Cleber a minute
or so later, but Internacional held on until the final whistle. Barça
will have to wait a little longer before winning the one title missing from
their trophy cabinet, and the streets of Porto Alegre were awash with colour as
the ecstatic fans celebrated. |
