Valencia bounced back from their Spanish Super Cup defeat to beat Champions League winners Porto 2-1 and take the European Super Cup. Only three days after their match against Zaragoza, Claudio Ranieri's side flew to Monaco to take part in this prestigious event. The ex Chelsea manager decided to play his two fellow countrymen Corradi and Di Viao up front, and Corradi tested Vitor Baia early on. But Postiga went close for the Portuguese side, bringing a good save out of Cañizares and heading another effort wide a few minutes later.

Valencia were starting to get on top though, and shortly after Di Vaio headed Vicente's cross past the post, Baraja got on the end of a centre from Curro Torres to power a header over Baia from somewhere near the penalty spot. Cañizares had to be at his best to save from Carlos Alberto after the restart, but Di Vaio made it two with his first official goal for his new club soon afterwards, the keeper getting a hand to his header from Vicente's long cross but only succeeding in turning it into the net off the post.

Baraja (who was voted man of the match) could have added a couple more after that, but Víctor Fernández's side pulled one back out of the blue when substitute Quaresma fired in a long shot which Cañizares couldn't stop. But that was all Porto could muster, and Valencia went on to win their second European Super Cup title and their sixth title in only five years. Don't write them off just yet!
