Spain beat Peru 2-1 in their
friendly game at the Montjuic stadium in Barcelona, a match which manager
Iñaki Sáez used to give a run out to some of the players he
expects to call up for this summer's Euro 2004 competition in Portugal. The
manager left out youngsters Fernando Torres and Reyes, the former as he was
recovering from an injury and the latter to enable him to settle in his new
club Arsenal, and decided instead to have a look again at Luque and Tamudo,
both of whom came on in the second half.
His side found themselves
behind though with twenty minutes on the clock when Aston Villa's Solano
collected a cross from the left and fired a shot over Casillas and in to the
top corner of the net, and Casillas tipped another shot from Hidalgo onto the
bar a few minutes later. However Etxeberría made it all square ten
minutes later with a first time volley after Vicente's cross was headed up, and
Baraja put the home side in front soon afterwards when he connected with
another cross from Vicente to head down past Ibañez.
Both sides were allowed
seven changes, and Sáez made all his at half time, with Joaquín,
Luque and local boy Tamudo coming on to lead the attack. Within two minutes
Tamudo hit the post on a quick breakaway, but after that they hardly troubled
keeper Ibañez. And the South Americans came close to levelling the
scores later on when Zaragoza's Rebosio headed a corner over the bar, and
substitute Silva brought the best save of the night out of Cañizares.
